Paper Wristbands vs. Tyvek Wristbands

You probably haven’t given wristbands nearly as much thought as we have and frankly, we don’t blame you. When you think of an event wristband, you likely think of a single-use band that goes around your wrist that you simply dispose of once you are done with it. For that reason, you probably haven’t considered the differences between paper wristbands and Tyvek wristbands. Is there a difference? Are they the same exact thing? In this article, we discuss paper wristbands vs. Tyvek wristbands.

Are paper wristbands the same as Tyvek wristbands?

The short answer is yes, paper wristbands are the same as Tyvek wristbands. However, it is important to note that Tyvek is not in fact a paper product. Tyvek is actually a synthetic material made from high-density polyethylene fibers. In other words, it is a type of recyclable plastic. Because of their paper-like texture, they are often called paper wristbands.

Paper wristbands are great for short-term use because they are comfortable, waterproof, and completely customizable. Many businesses, such as waterparks, theme parks, hotels, and resorts use them because they offer a simple and inexpensive way to validate admission.

Are there wristbands made from actual paper?

The overwhelming majority of paper wristbands being sold online and in retail stores like Hobby Lobby or Walmart are made from Tyvek. However, in recent years, different overseas manufacturers have begun making cheap knockoffs that are also made from synthetic material. These bargain brand paper wristbands do not offer the same quality as those made from Tyvek.

Online reviews often gripe about the waxy texture and the discoloration of the bands. We were skeptical of this and decided to do our own research by purchasing a pack. The first thing we noticed was the texture. When applied, the edges scrape against the skin. The material certainly doesn’t fit comfortably and might cause agitation with prolonged use. The easiest way I can explain it is that it feels like you are wearing a bracelet made from scotch tape. To test the durability, we made a small cut to the edge of the band using a pair of scissors. By simply moving my hand back and forth, the band immediately ripped in half and fell off my wrist. That said, these wristbands are not suitable for outdoor use or any activity where small tears might occur.

Which material should I choose?

Truthfully, quality does matter. You don’t want to give your guests a wristband that is visibly cheap and flimsy as this may reflect poorly on your event or brand. For this reason, we highly recommend choosing paper wristbands made from Tyvek. Our Tyvek wristbands are perfect for multiday usage, both indoors and outdoors. The bands are made to fit comfortably and securely around any wrist. The best part is that they are completely customizable. Follow these steps to create your own custom wristbands!
