Skin Cancer

Skin cancer takes on a couple of different forms: basal/squamous (nonmelanoma), and melanoma. Basal cells are near the lower end of the epidermis, where they will move up to the top and become squamous cells. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common kind of skin cancer (roughly 80% of skin cancers are basal cell-related), and look like raised red bumps. They grow very slowly and rarely will spread to the rest of the body – though they may grow if left untreated for long periods of time. In general, these cancers are among the least problematic of any type of cancer – but still should be removed for aesthetic and cancerous purposes. Squamous cell carcinoma lies as the second most popular form of skin cancer, and results in unsightly red sores. For those often in the sun or exposed to UV conditions, SCC is going to be a common phenomenon. If allowed to grow, they can be very dangerous and even deadly but are able to be cured and removed quickly. SCC’s lead to a wide variety of diseases: HPV, head/neck cancer, esophageal cancer, and many others. The final common kind of skin cancer is melanoma, a malignant and aggressive skin cancer that causes patches of dark skin. These patches spread out from existing moles quickly and pose an immediate threat to the health of the victim. With skin cancer as a major force in modern medicine, awareness and testing are key.
